Facebook Timeline Cover Photo

Customize your Facebook Cover Photo.

Facebook's new Timeline rolled out today and the new Cover Photo feature is something that every Internet Marketer will want to customize. It's a little bit trickier than it looks, though.

If you take a look at the public side of my Facebook profile, you'll see that the Cover Photo is a large banner across the top of the page and no doubt the most prominent feature. Facebook does not want you to use this for advertising, but most marketers won't be able to resist. That means you'll be adding text and maybe graphics on top of the photo you choose.

Without getting too techie, the glitch is that the cover photo size and the display size are both different, which could throw you off when designing your custom cover. In other words, some of your picture is cut off by Facebook and not visible. Here are the exact cover photo dimensions:

  • Cover Photo Size (Physical Dimensions): 853px X 315px
  • Display Size ("What You Can See" Dimensions): 851px X 314px

Facebook will hide 1px on the top and 2px on the right of your cover photo, so don't have any important design elements in those areas. I know its a very small amount of cutoff, but an intricate design could look flawed with even a little edge missing.

When you upload your Cover Photo, Facebook will create a new album for you called Cover Photos. Be sure to delete any test or unused photos from that album after you get yours all set up. You might also want to hide from your Timeline all the "User just added a new Cover Photo" posts.

To help you out creating your personal Facebook Cover Photo, I've attached to this article a Photoshop .PSD and a Pixlr .PXD master file that are already sized correctly. I've added a mask to each of them so you can see what part of your design will be hidden. Be sure to save/export your .JPG file as the full 853px by 315px size, otherwise Facebook will resize your Cover Photo and that will make it look terrible.

If you want to hide your Facebook Cover Photo, simply use an all white or blank photo or a generic scene of the beach or forest. You can use the design files below if you want to make your own, otherwise just search for "blank facebook cover photo".

It's been said, that you never get a second chance to make a good first impression. That is truer than ever with Facebook's new Cover Photo feature because the image you choose will be front, center and BIG!

  1. thank you for all the tips. I actually dislike that i have to get past the big ugly cover photos just to find my friends latest status update. so I am leaving mine blank after trying out a load i made in photoshop. if only it was not so tall. a nice long thin cover photo i could put up with. i still appreciated the tips.
